Discover the unknown

Scan sea creatures and learn about over 500 species of marine life – some of which are presumed extinct or are even mythical! Let’s meet some of the animals in Endless Ocean Luminous…

As well as a common name, all creatures have a scientific name that’s written in italics

ORCA
Orcinus orca

Sociable mammals, orcas hunt in family groups. They have unique grey saddle patches’ at the base of their dorsal fins, as well as white patches near their eyes

JAPANESE FLAPJACK OCTOPUS
Ophisthotheuthis depressa

This deep-sea octopus looks like it’s wearing a skirt! The Japanese flapjack has no ink sac and preys on small crustaceans

GIANT MANTA RAY
Mobula birostris

The world’s largest ray, the giant manta’s winglike fins measure up to 9m across. It’s heavy, too, weighing up to 2 tonnes – about the same as a rhino. Whoa!

GREEN SEA TURTLE
Chelonia mydas

Unlike other sea turtle species, green sea turtles are herbivores, feeding on seagrass and algae. They’re named after the colour of their fat

BLUE TANG
Paracanthurus hepatus

The vibrant blue tang is bright yellow when it’s young. Its thin body helps it hide inside coral reef crevices to escape predators

PELICAN EEL
Eurypharynx pelecanoides

This deep-sea fish has a bioluminescent tail tip that attracts prey such as small crustaceans or fish. It can inflate its mouth, making it look a bit like a balloon

GIANT SQUID
Architeuthis dux

This massive squid has eight arms, plus two 10m-long tentacles that it uses to snatch prey. Yikes! The deep-sea creature’s eyes are the size of beachballs

AMMONITES
Ammonoidea sp.

Related to squids and octopuses, these ammonites had unique spiral shells. They died out at the end of the Cretaceous period, 66 million years ago

OKEANOS’S GUARDIAN

Lurking around ruins in Endless Ocean Luminous, this monstrous beast is leader to the goblin sharks living around it. Check out its menacing grin. Gulp!
