Take these to the playground and impress your friends!
– Cricket was first recorded in South East England in the early 16th century.
– The oldest surviving set of cricket rules date from 1744 and are written on a hanky – yuck!
– Prince Christian Victor Albert Ludwig Ernst Anton of Schleswig-Holstein (that’s a mouthful!) – grandson to Queen Victoria – played cricket to a professional level in the late 1800s, and even our very own Queen Elizabeth II, is said to be a fan of the sport.
– Pakistani player Shoaib Akhtar holds the record for the fastest ball ever bowled in cricket history at 161.3km/h – yikes!
– The series known as ‘The Ashes‘ – played between England and Australia every two years – was so named after a humiliating defeat by the Australians at The Oval in 1882. The English papers named it ‘the death of English cricket’ and deemed that ‘the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia’.
