Listen up, puzzle solvers! Are you ready for the most mind-muddling Rubik’s challenge yet? Let’s go!
The bamboozling block of fun is set to land in Bristol for its latest brain-boggling battle; the Rubik’s UK Championships 2016!
Taking place on 5 and 6 November 2016, ‘Speedcubers’ from across the country will compete to see who can solve the Rubik’s Cube in the fastest time.
And that’s not all, these super solvers will be attempting to crack the puzzle in different ways, too – including blindfolded, one-handed and even using their feet!
Meet a real-life Speedcuber!
We caught up with super Speedcuber Laurence Livsey, who’ll be taking on the challenge at the UK Championships…
NG KiDS: Hi Laurence! When did you first pick up a Rubik’s Cube?
Laurence: I first saw one on the Will Smith film, The Pursuit of Happyness. I was instantly inspired to get my hands on one and solve it. I told my mum that I needed one for an assignment at school – which wasn’t strictly true! That night I solved it for the first time, and now six years later I’ve solved it tens of thousands of times.
Cool! When did you start speedcubing properly?
My friends kept challenging me to get faster! My first competition was the UK Championships in 2012, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
What’s is your fastest solve time?
Of all my timed solves, the fastest I ever achieved was 6.97 seconds. On average I take around 13 seconds.
What do you love about speedcubing?
I love the atmosphere at the competitions – everyone comes together to solve the cube and share their secrets. Although we’re competing, everyone is rooting for each other. Some of my best friends are the people that I’ve been competing with the last four years or so.
Has solving Rubik’s Cubes helped you in other areas of your life?
Solving Rubik’s Cubes has changed my life in ways that I never imagined! The effects have been overwhelmingly positive: it’s led to new friendships, travels, and even towards my job in the toy industry.
