Lion Kingdom

Nat Geo Wild Big Cat Week cheetah

Filmed over eight years, this drama follows three lion prides living near The Glade in Ruaha, Tanzania’s largest national park. The Glade is an oasis with lots of water that attracts prey. There is enough for everyone, yet the lion prides are always competing to control the territory. The Glade pride is small but smart, the Baobab pride is the largest and the Njaa are drifters who have become expert buffalo hunters.

 

Episode 1| Pride and Punishment | Sunday 7 Jan | 6 P.M.

The Glade is a paradise in the dry lands of Ruaha and the lush environment spawns unlikely relationships, like a baboon family living side by side with the lion pride. The peace is shattered when thousands of buffalo arrive to drink. The Baobab pride arrives to hunt the buffalo and war breaks out…

 

Episode 2 | Hunter of Giants | Sunday 7 Jan | 6.48 P.M.

The pools attract elephants, who dig into the sand with their trunks to tap the cleanest water. Life carries on, but soon things change. Adult males are on their way. When the Glade pride teams up with a hungry male to take down a buffalo, they do it knowing that they are taking a big risk. Their future may be at stake…

 

Episode 3 | Blood Rival | Sunday 7 Jan | 7.37 P.M.

Change comes to the Glade. An adult male returns to be the leader and a father again. The cubs grow quickly. There is one male among them and once he’s a little older, he starts playing dangerous games. Lion fathers turn on young males. To survive, this cub must find a new pride.

 

Cheetah

Man Among Cheetahs | Sunday 14 Jan | 6 P.M.

Wildlife cinematographer Bob Poole goes to a rugged and picturesque corner of Kenya to capture rare moments of the world’s fastest predators. He follows a fearless cheetah mother as she tries to raise her cubs and teach them the skills they need to survive.

 

The Miracle Cheetah | Sunday 14 Jan | 6.48 P.M.

Born a wild cheetah in South Africa’s North West province, Sibella’s life nearly ended at the hands of hunters. Lying at death’s door, fear and mistrust in her eyes, she was rescued by the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust. In December 2003, Sibella was flown to Samara along with two males. Sibella has outlived most cheetah in the wild and  proving herself to be a good hunter even though her old injuries still trouble her at times.

 

Tiger

The World’s Most Famous Tiger | Sunday 21 Jan | 6 P.M.

Machli was the world’s most famous tiger. Nicknamed the Queen of Ranthambore, she was a fearsome warrior known for her daring exploits. She was the mother of an incredible four litters of cubs as well.

 

Jaguar

Nat Geo Wild Big Cat Week cheetah

Jaguars VS Crocs | Sunday 28 Jan | 6 P.M.

Wildlife photographer Steve Winter and cameraman Bertie Gregory capture the lives of jaguars in the Pantanal of Brazil. A mother jaguar teaches her cub survival while Scarface, a determined male, dives head first into the river to tackle a deadly 1.8-metre-long caiman. Clever capybaras and playful giant otters stick with their family members to avoid being jaguar dinner.
