The Guggenheim Mystery

The Guugenheim Mysteries book

My name is Ted Spark. I am 12 years and 281 days old. I have seven friends.

Three months ago, I solved the mystery of how my cousin Salim disappeared from a pod on the London Eye. This is the story of my second mystery.

This summer, I went on holiday to New York, to visit Aunt Gloria and Salim. While I was there, a painting was stolen from the Guggenheim Museum, where Aunt Gloria works.

Everyone was very worried and upset. I did not see what the problem was. I do not see the point of paintings, even if they are worth millions of pounds. Perhaps that’s because of my very unusual brain, which works on a different operating system to everyone else’s.

But then Aunt Gloria was blamed for the theft – and Aunt Gloria is family. And I realised just how important it was to find the painting, and discover who really had taken it.

Amazing art heists through history…

There have been many infamous cases of artwork being stolen over the centuries — some of which was recovered and some of which has never been found! Check out some real-life cases, below…

Mona Lisa

The Guugenheim Mysteries book

Leonardo da Vinci‘s Mona Lisa – one of the most recognised paintings in the world – was stolen from its hanging place in the Louvre Museum, Paris in 1911. Unbelievably, the painting was smuggled out by an ex-employee of the museum — who concealed it under his clothes! Thankfully, it was recovered just a couple of years later.

The Scream

The Guugenheim Mysteries book

Of the four versions that Edvard Munch created of his spooky scene, The Scream –  two have been pinched! Firstly in 1994, when four men broke into a museum in Oslo and stole the prized piece. The thieves even left behind a thank you note that read, “Thanks for the poor security”! Then, just over a decade ago, a second version of the famous painting was stolen, again in Oslo. Two masked and armed men entered the Munch Museum and helped themselves to the famous picture. Thankfully, both were later recovered.

Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee

The Guugenheim Mysteries book

The year 1990 saw the biggest art heist in history! Two thieves disguised as police officers gained entrance to the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum in Boston, USA, telling staff they were investigating a disturbance. They made off with 13 precious works of art, valued at an estimated $300 million! The loot included an incredibly famous painting by Rembrandt, Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee. To this day there’s still a $5 million reward for any information that leads to the return of the painting — blimey!
