How to make your own coasters

Make your own coasters

What you’ll need:

We used cork tiles for our coasters, but you could also use small bathroom tiles or thick cardboard – ask an adult to cut the cork or cardboard into 10cm x 10cm squares
Old magazines or recycled wrapping paper
PVA glue and a brush
Clear varnish
Ribbon (optional)

Step 1

Make your own coasters

Go through old magazines to find images you can use on your coasters. Place your tile over the picture and draw around it.

Step 2

Make your own coasters

Cut out the image. We went wild and used old copies of Nat Geo Kids, but you could use old wrapping paper or printouts of your favourite photos.

Step 3

Make your own coasters

To stop your images from crinkling, paint the back of the image with a thin layer of PVA glue and leave to dry.

Step 4

Make your own coasters

When dry, apply PVA glue to the cork and neatly stick the image in place. Remove any bumps by placing some scrap paper on top and smoothing out from the middle with the edge of a ruler. Leave to dry.

Step 5

Make your own coasters

Add a coat of varnish to the coaster and leave this to dry. Then you could tie up all your finished coasters with a ribbon and give them as a gift!

TOP TIP

If you use tiles, glue little patches of felt to the base of each corner to stop them from damaging surfaces!
