Back to school crossword primary resource - small imageThis primary resource features a colourful crossword themed around school, the classroom and different school subjects. Children will be challenged to answer 30 questions and complete the grid.

The teaching resource can be used in study-group tasks for improving writing and spelling, or simply to provide a fun classroom activity for the children to enjoy. It can be used as a printed handout for each pupil to review and annotate, or for display on the interactive whiteboard.

This primary resource and activity assists with teaching the following Key Stage 1 English (Year 1) objectives from the National Curriculum:

Handwriting

Pupils should be taught to:

  • sit correctly at a table, holding a pencil comfortably and correctly
  • begin to form lower-case letters in the correct direction, starting and finishing in the right place
  • form capital letters

 

National Curriculum Key Stage 1 Science (Year 1) objectives:

Pupils should be taught to:  

  • identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals 
  • describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including pets)

 

National Curriculum Key Stage 1 Science (Year 2) objective:

Pupils should be taught to:

  • identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including micro- habitats 

  

National Curriculum Lower Key Stage 2 Science (Year 4) objectives:

Pupils should be taught to:

  • recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways 
  • recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things.

  

National Curriculum Key Stage 1 Geography objectives: 

Pupils should be taught to:

  • name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans 

 

This primary resource and activity assists with teaching the following Literacy and English Early level objectives from the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence:

  • As I play and learn, I enjoy exploring interesting materials for writing and different ways of recording my experiences and feelings, ideas and information

 

Scottish Curriculum for Excellence First level Literacy and English objectives:

  • By considering the type of text I am creating, I can select ideas and relevant information, organise these in a logical sequence and use words which will be interesting and/or useful for others.

 

Scottish Curriculum for Excellence Second level Literacy and English objectives:

  • By considering the type of text I am creating, I can select ideas and relevant information, organise these in an appropriate way for my purpose and use suitable vocabulary for my audience.

 

Scottish Curriculum for Excellence Third level & Fourth level Literacy and English objectives:

  • By considering the type of text I am creating, I can independently select ideas and relevant information for different purposes, and organise essential information or ideas and any supporting detail in a logical order. I can use suitable vocabulary to communicate effectively with my audience.

 

This primary resource assists with teaching the following Sciences Early level objectives from the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence:

  • I have observed living things in the environment over time and am becoming aware of how they depend on each other


Scottish Curriculum for Excellence Second level Sciences objectives:

  • I can identify and classify examples of living things, past and present, to help me appreciate their diversity. I can relate physical and behavioural characteristics to their survival or extinction.  

 

Scottish Curriculum for Excellence Sciences Third level objectives:

  • I can sample and identify living things from different habitats to compare their biodiversity and can suggest reasons for their distribution.
