Ready for an out-of-this-world baking adventure? Transform your favourite biscuits into a sweet solar system with this easy planet cookies recipe…

planet cookies | colourful iced biscuits decorated in red, orange, green and blue swirls sit on a blue plate

What you’ll need…

  • – 150g icing sugar
  • – 20ml warm water (about 4 teaspoons)
  • – Food colouring (we used gels)
  • – Toothpicks
  • – Biscuits to decorate. Choose ones that have a smooth surface to help the icing glide on – or bake your own!
the image shows three plain biscuits on a plate alongside three squeezy tubs of icing in green, purple and orange colours. There are a few toothpicks scattered on the plate. Beside the plate is a pink box of icing sugar.

Planet cookies recipe

Step 1

how to make planet cookies | a white bowl contains icing sugar, a small amount of water and a teaspoon

Measure out the icing sugar in a bowl and add about four teaspoons of warm water, a little bit at a time, stirring as you go.

Step 2

planet cookies recipe | a hand is holding up a teaspoon, the back of which is covered with thick white icing

The icing needs to be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. It should run off the spoon slowly but not be too runny or too thick. Add a drop more water if needed.

Step 3

how to make planet cookies | a bowl contains white icing which a few drops of blue and green food colouring have been placed into. There is a toothpick resting on the side of the bowl, which has been used to swirl the drops together.

When you’re happy with the consistency, put some of the icing mixture into a smaller bowl that’s big enough to dip your biscuit into. Add a few drops of food colouring and use a toothpick to swirl the colours together.

FUN CHALLENGE!

Can you match your cosmic cookies to the planets in our solar system? Use different bowls for different colour combos. Make sure you give the icing a stir to break up any crust before adding the food colouring.

Step 4

planet cookies recipe | a hand dips a biscuit into a bowl of icing

Dunk the top side of the biscuit into the surface of the icing, holding it by the edges. Twist slightly so the whole surface is coated.

Step 5

a biscuit is held above a bowl of icing that it has just been dipped in. It is dripping with white icing full of green and blue swirls, which runs slowly off the bottom edge and drops back into the bowl below.

Lift up your coated biscuit and let the icing slowly drip down to create more swirls. Run a toothpick along the biscuit’s edge to remove the excess icing (or wipe it on the edge of your bowl). Then put it flat on a plate for the icing to harden.

TOP TIP!

The icing should be hard and ready to eat after about half an hour. But if you’re saving them for later, leave to dry for a couple of hours before stacking them.
