Mars is nicknamed the Red Planet because ‘rust’ in the soil gives the planet its striking red colour. Check out ten more marvellous facts about Mars.
1. Days on Mars are about 40 minutes longer than on Earth. And the years are almost twice as long.
2. Earth’s tides are caused by the pull of Moon’s gravity on the Earth’s oceans.
3. Mars is named after the Roman god of war.
4. The name of a person who studies life in space is an Astrobiologist.
5. Mars has two moons – Phobos and Deimo.
6. Mars is home to the tallest volcano in the solar system – Olympus Mons.
7. It would take approximately 8 months to travel to Mars. It’s average distance from Earth is 225 million km.
8. Mars is the fourth closest planet to the Sun. Mercury, Venus, and Earth and closer.
9. The air on Mars in too thin to breathe.
10. You can bounce around on Mars because the gravity there is less than Earth’s.
